Blinded by the Light
May 7, 2013
Spring is here, and summer is just around the corner, bringing the sunshine we’ve all been eager to see! But as you enjoy the sun this year, please remember the potential of its harmful UV radiation. Many people are aware of the risk of UV damage to the skin, but some don’t realize how UV exposure can harm our eyes and/or vision, making SPF lotions, hats, and quality sunglasses an important precaution.
UV exposure can cause or worsen many conditions:
- Skin Cancer: Basal cell carcinoma is the most common cancer to affect the eyelids, typically on the lower lid due to the greatest amount of sun exposure
- Photokeratitis: Painful burn of the cornea, caused by a long day at the beach without sunglasses; reflections off of snow, water, or concrete; welding without proper protection; or exposure to high intensity light sources in tanning beds
- Pterygium: Abnormal growth on the surface of the eye, which can grow to cause corneal problems and distorted vision and may require surgery to be removed
- Cataract: Clouding of the natural lens inside the eye, making it difficult to read small print and drive at night due to bothersome glare
- Macular Degeneration: Age-related damage to the central portion of the retina, causing decreased reading vision and potentially blindness
Fortunately, protecting your eyes from harmful UV rays can be easy … and fashionable! In addition to applying SPF lotions and moisturizers, look for a quality set of sunglasses to fight the summer rays. At Healthy Eyes, we have a great variety of sunglass sizes and designs to match each person’s style.
